UN Ends Penalties on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.
He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of domestic strife.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for backing of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week comes after President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened initially during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting is not the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. This past fall, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
