Thunder Kick Off Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the winning baskets late in double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.
"Grit and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, the team's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were presented with their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
